SavvyGameLine has been gearing up for the 2023 football season and I have grades and rankings for the quarterback situations of every team in FBS.
Keep in mind that these are not ratings for starting quarterbacks but rather an over all assessment of the quarterback “rooms” for every program to determine this question:
From the standpoint of just the quarterback room and not considering other factors such as returning starters, coaches, schedule, etc., how probable is it that this team will achieve results equal to last season.
Teams with grades B-plus or higher are nearly “locks” to be as effective from the quarterback position while teams with grades C-minus and below are likely to drop.
Although USC produced last year’s Heisman Trophy winner in Caleb Williams, the quarterbacks behind him are uncertain and untested. Ohio State no longer has dynamic quarterback C. J. Stroud and enters this season with Oregon State transfer Tristen Gebbia as its most-experienced player behind center. Yet, Gebbia was only third string at the Beavers’ OSU and he’s only fourth string at the Buckeyes’ OSU. The starting quarterback listed for Ohio State is Kyle McCord who has little experience and can’t run. The likelihood that Ohio State’s quarterback room will be as talented or deep as last year earns a D+ grade.
Oregon State wins this year’s quarterback situation assessment because it has a former number one national recruit as its projected starter and a ten-game winner and former starter backing him up. If that wasn’t enough, the Beavers have one of the most exciting and effective freshmen waiting in the wings. Oregon State’s success at the quarterback position is about as close as you can come to a guarantee as you can get.
