College football at last! — predictions for week 1, 2020

Don’t ya love it?

College football is actually happening in 2020!

And, we don’t have to wait any longer because this Thursday we get things kicked off with:

South Alabama at Southern Mississippi

Southern Mississippi should have little trouble at home against South Alabama although the early Savvy projection is a conservative 12 points.   Both teams need better play from their quarterbacks but SMiss is favored 33-21 because the Golden Eagles won seven games in 2019 compared to just two for the Jaguars and because USM has an advantage in its returning roster.

Central Arkansas at UAB

Most experts agree that UAB’s stature as a perennial bowl team will put this game out of reach for Central Arkansas of the FCS.

However, UAB’s quarterback Tyler Johnson III has less than 60% completion rate to go with a horrendous 6% interception rate.  Among other factors, Johnson’s low-rate passing is one reason UAB is only a one possession favorite.

C. Arkansas is known to be an FBS assassin so don’t be surprised if the Bears pull this one off.

Best game of the week:

Arkansas State at Memphis

Arkansas State is going to be dynamite on offense this season.  The Red Wolves are in the upper one-third of FBS for returning skill players and the offensive line returns almost in whole from last year’s bowl team.

Quarterback Lane Hatcher completed more than 65% for more than 2900 yards.

Memphis will counter with spectacular quarterback Brady White (4000 passing yards) in pursuit of another 12-win season.

But the big question mark for Memphis is its change at the top after head coach Jay Norvell took his string of successes to Florida State.

Savvy is showing a 35-28 Memphis win.
