Savvy Index rankings of all 130 FBS teams

Before we get into the Savvy Index 2020 preseason rankings, I have a riddle for you:

Why did it take UTEP so long to put up its website?

Because it took years for them to come up with three w’s.’

Sorry UTEP fans.  But be patient because your coach, Dana Dimal, is showing enough up-trends on Savvy to believe you won’t always be at the bottom of the rankings.

Although I am not including commentary today, data in the five right-most columns provides enough of an overview that it becomes somewhat of a “narrative-in-data” for the majority of teams.  We’ll follow in a few days with commentary on teams in the top 15, some conference previews, and compelling undercurrents in some programs.

Each team has a calculated “program base” which is the value of each program. It is somewhat like “prestige” ratings used in video football games.

That program base is then modified by 1-through-10 values for each team’s coaching situation, quarterback situation, and returning effective producers (REP).

(A word about the column for “Returning effective production”: (REP) is somewhat like other systems that seek to use statistics to determine how much of last year’s talent returns to this year’s team.  Savvy does that as well except that we discovered some time ago that those assessments become much more accurate when players who identified as “difference makers” have their ratings meaningfully boosted.)
